Storm Damage

Last week we got hit with some pretty big storms, and the big old oak tree, that had been standing in our front yard since way before it was a front yard, couldn't quite handle it. We'd gone online and did some estimating a few years ago and we figured it was 200-250 years old. I often thought about what that tree had seen over the years. It stood there during WWI & II, and the Civil War. There's a good chance it was there during the Revolutionary War. That tree probably saw buffalo following a trail that eventually became Ohio Rt4, and saw Henry Ford's Model Ts going through the mud and ruts. It had gotten some hollow in the middle of it, I knew that, but those winds finally were too much for it. Fortunately it fell away from the house, and it barely reached the barn. It bent up a little metal, not too bad, and I see one branch punched through.

Out by the pond there were two big poplars, one on each end. The far one couldn't quite stand up to the wind and it went over too. It's a huge root ball that came up when it went down, probably over 10 feet high. I'm thinking when it finally gets cut up that root ball may return into the pond where it came from.

Reports say it was probably an EF-0 tornado, but whatever it was the place will never be quite the same.
